Chapter Fifteen

It was a glorious Friday afternoon, and Tilly and Ronin were strolling along the grounds of the David Davis mansion. When Tilly had researched the open hours online, she’d found that there was a Garden Walk this weekend, so they could tour the private gardens of several properties near the mansion in addition to the beautifully cultivated gardens of the mansion itself.

“This is just stunning!” she exclaimed, pointing to a water fountain surrounded by delicate blooms. “I feel like I’m in a European garden.”

Ronin smiled as he pulled his phone out of his pocket. Tilly knelt to look more closely at the vibrant purple flowers, and he snapped a picture of her without her noticing. He glanced at the screen and was struck by her wide eyes, shining with enjoyment and happiness. He wished he could make her look like this all the time.

“European gardens seem like a cool thing to see.” Thinking about a honeymoon trip, he shook his head. Not going there.

“I know, right?” Tilly stood and moved toward a four-foot-tall statue of an angel in the middle of a circle of hostas under the shade of a giant oak tree. “I was just talking to Anna Lee about gardens around the world. She said she’s never been out of the US, but she loves to look at pictures of all sorts of gardens, anywhere in the world.”

“Pictures aren’t as good as the real thing.” He thought about the picture he’d sneakily snapped of her. It was good, and he’d cherish having it, but looking at Tilly now, noticing her quickly shifting expressions, he knew he could study her face all day long and never tire of it.

An older couple holding hands walked past them slowly. The woman gave Ronin a sly smile; she must have read something in his face that he didn’t intend for anyone to see. His features stilled as Tilly turned toward him again.

“Do you want to look around inside? See if it’s big enough for the party?” she asked, swinging her tote bag back and forth.

Ronin loved her constant energy. She was always up for an adventure or for trying something new. Even when she was unsure of herself, like riding the bike on Sunday with his family. She willingly admitted that she might not be able to keep up, but she was going to hang in there and come along in her own sweet time.

“Sure. Let’s take a quick look.” He knew she was getting a kick out of looking at the flowers. She had taken a hundred pictures so far, and she would probably take a hundred more. She said she wanted to show them to Anna Lee.

Inside the historic home, they chatted with the events manager, who gave them a price sheet and checked availability for August 19th. The manager said it was currently open, but suggested they lock it in within a week to secure the date.

They exited the mansion and followed the signs to the next house on the Garden Walk tour.
